Your MAT score is out and the real question begins: which MBA seat is actually worth the fee? A good way to decide is return on investment, or ROI — how your likely starting salary compares with what the degree costs you. This guide shows how to think about it, without chasing brochure numbers.

A simple way to read ROI

The idea is easy. Put the two-year fee next to the average salary that graduates of that college actually get. If the first-year salary is close to the full fee, the ROI is strong. If the fee is far above the salary, be careful, however good the campus looks.

Use real numbers, not brochure numbers

Placement averages in a brochure can be lifted by a few very high offers. Ask current students and recent graduates for the honest median salary, and read the fee break-up in full before you compare.

What a MAT percentile can get you

Broadly, a higher percentile opens a wider set of colleges and better scholarship bands. But a percentile is a filter, not a promise. Most schools still run a group discussion and interview, so your final admission depends on that round too. Plan your shortlist in three layers.

Shortlist layerWhat it means
ReachColleges where your score is around or slightly below the usual cut-off
MatchColleges where your score comfortably clears recent cut-offs
SafeColleges where your score is well above the cut-off and admission is likely

ROI is a compass, not a cage

  • Fit matters. If a subject genuinely interests you, a slightly lower-ROI college with strong teaching in that area can still be the right pick.
  • City cost matters. Rent in a big metro versus a smaller city can shift your real break-even by a year.
  • Network matters. A larger, active alumni base can speed up later job moves, which improves your true long-term ROI.

A short checklist before you commit

  • Rank your top five colleges by specialisation and ROI together, not fee alone.
  • Talk to a lender early so your budget is clear before the interview calls arrive.
  • Start your statement of purpose now, rather than waiting for the first call.
  • Do a mock group discussion and interview every week until your rounds begin.
Verify every figure yourself

Fees, average salaries and cut-offs change each year and vary by college. Confirm the current numbers on each college’s official page before you decide. A number that reads right in a table can still be out of date.

A high percentile is a strong ticket, but the college you board decides the journey. Sharpen your score with real mocks and e-books on elearning.learncrew.org or via our Books and Mocks hub, and see our past results on the results page.
