The short answer

The PGCET MBA paper is one objective test of 100 questions for 100 marks. The syllabus KEA published for the 2026 exam had five sections of 20 questions each: Computer Awareness, Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Analysis, English Language, and General Knowledge. There is no negative marking. KEA has not released the PGCET 2027 brochure yet, so everything on this page comes from the official 2026 syllabus and recent cycles. When the 2027 notice appears on kea.kar.nic.in, read it once before you lock your plan.

The paper at a glance

In recent cycles the MBA test has run for 120 minutes. Every question carries one mark, and a wrong answer costs nothing. That single rule should change how you write the paper: never leave a question blank. An educated guess has value; an empty bubble has none.

One caution before the section list. Many older guides still describe a four-section MBA paper of 25 questions each, with no Computer Awareness at all. That was the earlier structure. The syllabus KEA released for 2026 clearly lists five sections of 20 questions each, with Computer Awareness as a full section. Work from the five-section list, and confirm it once more in the 2027 brochure, because KEA can revise the pattern in any year.

Computer Awareness: the section people miss

This is the section that surprises BA, B.Com and B.Sc graduates the most, because it sounds like an MCA topic sitting inside an MBA paper. Relax: it is theory, not programming. Nobody asks you to write code. The 2026 syllabus covered computer basics — hardware parts, memory, operating systems and the internet; data representation — binary numbers, ASCII and hexadecimal; binary arithmetic, including two’s complement and floating-point form; and how operating systems evolved, their types and their functions. All of it is learnable from standard notes in a few weeks. And because it is factual, it rewards memory directly: if you studied it, you score it. For a fresher from a non-computer background, this section is often the cheapest 20 marks on the paper.

Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning

The listed areas are puzzles, analogy, logical reasoning, verbal reasoning, analytical ability and diagram-based questions. This section cannot be crammed the week before. Reasoning is a skill, like cycling — you build it by doing a small number of questions every day for months. Start with analogies and series, move to seating and arrangement puzzles, and keep a notebook of the question types that trap you. Speed matters here more than in any other section, because a puzzle that takes four minutes has quietly eaten the time of four easy questions elsewhere.

Quantitative Analysis

The official topic list is short: arithmetic, data analysis and interpretation, and statistical analysis. In plain words, it is school-level maths that you must do fast and without a calculator. Percentages, ratios, averages and the reading of tables and graphs sit at the heart of it. The list being short is not a reason to relax — it means the paper can test the same few skills in many disguises. The best way to see those disguises is to work through PGCET previous year papers and notice how the same arithmetic idea keeps returning in new clothes. If this is the section you fear most, our PGCET Quantitative Analysis preparation guide breaks it down further, with a daily plan for students from non-maths backgrounds.

English Language

The syllabus lists basic grammar, synonyms, antonyms, sentence correction, one-word substitution, idioms and phrases, and questions on well-known books in English literature. Half of this section is vocabulary, and vocabulary grows only one way: daily reading. Fifteen minutes with a newspaper editorial every morning does more for this section than a weekend of rule-mugging. Keep a small word list on your phone, add five words a day, and revise it while commuting. Grammar rules — subject-verb agreement, tenses, prepositions — can be finished from any standard book in three or four weeks.

General Knowledge

PGCET GK leans towards business and the economy. The listed areas include the Indian business environment, economics, management and entrepreneurship, along with current affairs, sports, awards, personalities, and science and technology. The pattern of the question is simple recall, so the preparation is a habit, not a sprint: ten minutes of news a day from now until the exam beats any last-month capsule. Give extra attention to budget items, RBI actions and business news from Karnataka, and note them in your own words — writing a fact once fixes it better than reading it thrice.

How to turn this syllabus into a plan

A syllabus tells you what to study; it does not tell you when. A simple sequence works for most people: build reasoning and quant as daily habits first, finish Computer Awareness as a focused block, run English vocabulary and GK as ten-minute daily routines throughout, and bring mocks in once the basics stand. Our PGCET 2027 month-by-month preparation plan lays this out from October to exam day, week by week. And once your mock scores settle into a range, our free PGCET rank and college predictor shows what that mark range turned into as a rank and a college list under KEA’s 2025 first-round cut-offs — an estimate from last year’s data, not an official figure, but a clear early signal of where you stand.

Study the list once. Then study the subjects.

The syllabus is the map, not the journey. If you want company for the journey, Learncrew’s PGCET coaching is fully online, with live classes four evenings a week — Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday — so you can join from any city in India, including from outside Karnataka. Batches run four months, every class is recorded, and e-books, mock tests and mentorship are included. The next batch starts in December 2026, which is comfortable timing for a 2027 attempt. Fees are ₹10,000 for MBA, ₹12,000 for MCA, and ₹4,000 for recorded-only access. In PGCET 2025, our students reached a highest State Rank of 23, with 70 students under rank 1000 — the details are on our results page. Read the syllabus once today. Then put it away and open a textbook — the marks live there.
