The number B-schools notice first isn’t your raw marks or even your composite score — it’s your percentile, the share of test-takers you finished ahead of. A 90-plus percentile puts you in the top tier of a session and opens most GD-PI calls; a 70 puts you on a very different college list. This guide walks the full pipeline from raw answers to percentile, with a worked example and a rough estimator.

3. The score pipeline, step by step
- Raw → Scaled (0–100). AIMA statistically equates each section so an easy set and a hard set are comparable.
- Scaled → Composite (200–800). The section scores are combined and rescaled onto the composite band.
- Composite → Percentile. Your composite is ranked against everyone in your session, and that rank becomes your percentile.

The numbers below are made up to show the mechanics — they are not from a real score card.

Yes. AIMA’s MAT site states that all five sections count toward your MAT score. Older AIMA material described a composite built from four sections, so you may still see that claim on other websites. Prepare Economic & Business Environment like any other scoring section.
8. How to push your percentile up
- Strengthen Maths and Data Analysis. They carry heavy scaling weight in the counted four.
- Practise timed mocks. Percentile is relative — improving speed and accuracy lifts your rank against the crowd.
- Do not neglect the fifth section. It doesn’t affect percentile, so never let it steal time from the core four.
- Analyse every mock percentile. Find the section pulling your scaled score down and patch it.
How to read your MAT scorecard
Your MAT scorecard shows a score for each section, an overall MAT score and a “percentile below” figure, which is the share of test-takers who scored below you. As per AIMA’s MAT site, MAT has five sections of 30 questions each (150 questions in 120 minutes), all five count toward your MAT score, and a quarter mark is deducted for each wrong answer.

- Is a fixed composite always the same percentile? No — it drifts with each session’s difficulty and cohort.
- Can a 70-percentile still get an MBA seat? Yes; plenty of colleges accept scores in the 60–75 band. Check current cut-offs on mat.aima.in and the colleges directly.
- Do scaled scores vary across sessions? Yes — equating exists precisely so an easier Quant set in one session doesn’t unfairly inflate percentiles.
- Does negative marking affect percentile? Indirectly — it lowers your raw and therefore scaled/composite score, but it’s your final rank that sets the percentile.
