30-Day MAT Preparation Plan for Working Professionals

Learn CrewUpdated 22 Jul 20268 min read

Thirty days is enough to turn after-work fatigue into structured MAT progress — if the plan respects the fact that you have a job. This is a 30-day MAT preparation plan built for working professionals: roughly two hours on weeknights, longer focused blocks on weekend mornings, and a mock-driven feedback loop so you always know what to fix next.

Before anything else, know the paper you’re preparing for: MAT is 150 questions in 120 minutes — five sections of 30, +1 / −0.25, scored on a 200–800 composite. Build every mock and drill around that structure.

Why a 30-day sprint works

  1. Recency. Concepts stay fresh, and you sit mocks in roughly the mental state you’ll be in on test day.
  2. Forced prioritisation. A tight window pushes you toward high-scoring topics instead of chasing academic perfection.
  3. Momentum. Daily micro-wins keep you going in a way that sprawling six-month timetables rarely do.

The working professional’s reality

  • Weekday time: about 2–2.5 hours an evening.
  • Deep-work windows: Saturday and Sunday mornings, when your mind is fresh.
  • Non-negotiables: work deliverables, family, rest. The plan slots around them — no 5 a.m. heroics required.

How the first week actually runs

DayEvening task (~2 hrs)Why it matters
1Read through the exam pattern and marking schemeContext before content
2Sit a 2-hour diagnostic mockEstablishes your baseline
3Analyse wrong answers; tag each as “concept gap” or “silly error”Fix precisely, not vaguely
4Learn 5 high-frequency arithmetic topics (ratios, averages, %)Covers a big slice of Quant
5Vocabulary + 15 reading-comprehension questionsVerbal warm-up
6Speed-maths shortcutsTrims calculation time
7Rest and reflectPrevents burnout
Weekends 1–4: Saturday morning is a full mock (3 hrs, mock + review); Saturday afternoon is the post-mortem and error log; Sunday morning re-learns your two weakest Quant areas plus a set of reasoning puzzles; Sunday afternoon is light verbal practice. Repeat the shape each week, raising the difficulty.

By day 30 you should have completed roughly 8 full mocks, a stack of sectionals, and a tidy error log — the habit that separates people who improve from people who just practise.

Evening rituals that stick

  1. Commute flashcards. Turn travel time into vocabulary reps.
  2. 90-minute Quant pods. Use a timer to mimic MAT’s pace.
  3. Read aloud, then summarise. Paraphrase a long article in three sentences to sharpen comprehension.
  4. Ten-minute wind-down. A short breather lowers stress and aids retention.

Track progress without spreadsheet phobia

  1. Error log: Date | Mock # | Topic | Error type | Fix. Five columns, nothing fancy.
  2. Accuracy trend: plot it per mock; aim for ≥ 80% by your sixth.
  3. Speed marker: track average time per question and push it down in Quant.
  4. Weekly retro: one win, one blocker, one tweak — every Sunday night.

Three mistakes working pros make

  1. Weekend-only cramming. Ten hours on Sunday can’t replace steady weeknight reps.
  2. Ignoring reading comprehension. Verbal is often the easiest place to add marks — protect a daily reading habit.
  3. Forgetting the admit card / slot. Book early; CBT centres and slots fill up.
