The PGCET 2026 result is out, and KEA counselling is the next step. Most students now watch only one number: their rank. But the seat you finally get depends on two things — your rank and your category. Two students with the same rank can land in very different colleges because their categories are different.
This guide explains Karnataka’s reservation categories in plain words: what GM, SC, ST, Category-1, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B mean, how KEA uses them during seat allotment, and which certificates you must keep ready. If you claim your category the right way, you compete in two lists instead of one. That is a real advantage, and it costs you nothing.
The categories, in plain words
Karnataka splits seats across a set of categories. Here is what each label means:
- GM (General Merit): the open list. Every single candidate competes here, whatever their caste or income. There is no certificate needed for GM.
- SC and ST: seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes of Karnataka.
- Category-1: a list of communities the Karnataka government treats as most backward.
- 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B: four groups of other backward classes, each with its own list of communities and its own share of seats. Your community’s group is fixed by the state’s official list — you cannot choose it.
How many seats each category gets in each college is published by KEA in the seat matrix before option entry. The exact split changes with the seat matrix each year, so read the current one on kea.kar.nic.in instead of trusting last year’s numbers.
One more thing matters for 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B: these claims are income-linked. Your family income must be below the limit the government sets, and you prove it with a caste-cum-income certificate. Confirm the current income limit on kea.kar.nic.in before you assume you qualify.
How KEA actually uses your category
Here is the part most students get wrong. Reservation in Karnataka works on merit first. During allotment, every candidate is considered for a General Merit seat in rank order. If your rank is strong enough to win a GM seat for the option you chose, you take the GM seat. Your category seat then stays available for the next person in your category. Reservation enters the picture only when your rank cannot get you the seat through the open list.
Claiming a category can never push you down. The system checks the open GM list for you first, then your category list. You only gain a second chance at each college — you never lose the first one.
This is why two friends with ranks 4,000 and 6,000 can both get the same college: one through GM, one through a category seat with a later closing rank. Each college, course and category combination has its own cutoff.
The special quotas: 371-J and PwD
Beyond the caste-based categories, two special claims come up often. The Article 371-J quota is for candidates from the Kalyana Karnataka (Hyderabad-Karnataka) region. If you studied in that region, a share of seats there is set aside for you, and you claim it with an eligibility certificate from the Assistant Commissioner of your taluk. The PwD quota is for candidates with a benchmark disability, claimed with a disability certificate from a competent authority. Both claims are verified during counselling, so the paperwork must exist before you reach that stage.
One group this whole system does not cover: candidates from outside Karnataka. If you did not study in Karnataka, you are eligible under GM only — no category, no special quota. We have covered exactly how that works in our guide on PGCET for non-Karnataka students.
The certificates that make the claim real
A category ticked in the application form means nothing on its own. KEA accepts the claim only when the certificate behind it is valid. Caste and caste-cum-income certificates come from the Tahsildar through the Nadakacheri system, and KEA verifies them online using the RD number printed on the certificate. A certificate in the wrong format, or one whose RD number does not verify, gets your claim rejected — and you slide to GM for the rest of counselling.

What this means for your cutoff
Because every category has its own closing rank at every college, never judge your chances by the GM cutoff alone. A college that closed at rank 3,500 in GM may have closed a few thousand ranks later in 2A or Category-1. If you only look at GM numbers, you will aim too low and waste your best options.

Mistakes that cost real seats
- Waiting for verification week: applying for a caste or income certificate after counselling starts. Issue takes time, and counselling will not wait.
- Name mismatches: the name on your certificate spelt differently from your marks cards. Fix the mismatch before verification, not at the counter.
- Old or wrong-format certificates: KEA expects specific formats issued by Karnataka authorities. A certificate from another state, or an outdated format, will not pass.
- Assuming category equals fee waiver: seat reservation and fee concessions are separate rules. Check the current fee notification on kea.kar.nic.in instead of assuming.
- Skipping the claim out of confidence: some students with good ranks do not bother claiming their category. There is no benefit in skipping it — merit is checked first anyway.
